Poker glossary

ABC player
A predictable player who plays mostly the obviously good hands

All In
When each player's available chips are placed in a pot. If he looses he has nothing left.

Ante
The forced minimum bet that players must stake before the start of a hand to take part in the hand.

Bad Beat
Beating a good hand that could win normally

Bankroll
The total money a player has to play poker

Big Slick
To hold AK cards with the first two cards, pocket or hole card

Blind Bet
Forced bet before the cards are seen; requires two players than all players on the table. Small Blind is smaller of two forced bets. It is half of the minimum opening bet. Big Blind is the larger of two forced bets. It is equal to minimum opening bet. The blinds are put so just everyone gets something to play for. 

Bluff
Betting a weak hand in pretence to have a better hand and to hope that other people will fold

Boat
Full house

Buy In
Amount a player must have to join a game.

Call
Placing a bet equal to previous bet

Check
Check to stay in game with no further bet.

Check - Raise
Start at the beginning of the round. Raise as your turn comes round again.

Fifth Street
Third betting round

Flop
First three community cards in hold’em games

Fold
Throw away cards. Get out of current game.

Fourth Street
Second betting round

Flush
Five cards of same suit to make flush.

Heads Up
Two players playing head to head

Kicker
The highest unpaired card from the hole or pocket cards

Limping In
Getting the big blind and joining game with no raising

Nuts
The best possible hand to beat at this stage of game

Pay Off - Paid Off
Making a call on the last betting round when you know you will beat very likely

Qualifier
Requirement to be met for a hand to become eligible for winning the pot, mostly in High-Low Split games

Rainbow
Hold’em flop of unorganized cards of dissimilar suits;

Rake
Percentage of pot taken by house

Raise
To increase the bet made by a player before you, to stay in the game

River
The final community card dealt with

Seventh Street
Fifth and final round of betting when the players have seven cards

Showdown
The last betting round when the left players compare hands. The best hand wins the pot.

Small Blind
Before cards are dealt first bet of game made by player to the left of dealer

Stack
Pile of chips or cash

Semi Bluffing
Betting a hand to have a draw. You can either win the pot if opponent folds or when you make your hand

Third Street
First round of betting

Turn
Fourth community card dealt

Underdog
Hand currently less likely to win

Variance
The numerical measure of how your results can be dispersed
